Module Six

My understanding of the model

'Redefinition' is about the teacher fully understanding that various devices are 'tools' for learning and not to replace the learning. Teachers need to not just download apps and say 'play', the app needs to have a purpose in the teaching. Therefore 'Modification' means that the teacher modifies the program already in place to incorporate devices ie instead of putting a picture on the smart board use 'Epic Citadel' to allow the students to explore then write, use the app 'Angle Metre' to measure angles, use the camera to 'Skitch' to label 3D objects in the environment. 'Augmentation' to use the device to completely use the device to enter a digital world such as that of Augmented Reality. Apps include AR Robot, Virtual Snow, AR Spaceship, AR Dinopark, Spider-Man AR, Money and Live Butterflies which can all be used for various KLA's. The best blog I found about Augmented Reality is
By Nathan Jones.
Finally 'Substitution' which is really hard for most teachers and let's say parents, letting go of the old pen and paper and using the device wholly. Parents like to see books and assessment results and most teachers always like to be able to provide the physical evidence.

Thank you for introducing me to Skitch, another fabulous app! As mentioned above you could use it to take photos in maths and label angles, sides etc etc, you could use it in science to documented experiments, you could use it as part of Religion and freeze frames annotating on speech or commentating.

I have to admit I do like Blogger as a choice for blogging as it is easy to use, I will however investigate the use if the others particularly in the yes of the students to see if it would be easy for them..... However it would be always their choice.....

  1. I see the model as the other way round with substitution as the lowest level with redefinition as the highest level.

My blog entry for this module gives a good overview which may help:

I also have a link posted there to Kathy Schrock's article on SAMR which I used to understand the model. I felt the article provided in the E-Book did not explain at all each level of the model.

The model itself is great for teachers to use in integrating technology for teaching and learning and to measure how the technology will impact on the learning process. By aspiring towards redefinition, we can teach in a means that can engage all students but also cater for the diverse learning needs of the classroom, especially special needs students.
